Particle of Hope is a compassionate campaign dedicated to saving the life of Alejandro Vazquez Rojas by identifying potential living liver donors. In collaboration with the NYU Langone Transplant Institute, the campaign provides clear, trustworthy information and guidance on how to begin the initial eligibility screening for those considering becoming a living donor for Alejandro.

I am writing on behalf of my beloved family member, Alejandro Vazquez Rojas, affectionately known as “Alex” to his family and friends. Watching someone you love confront a life-threatening illness is unimaginable, and yet this is the daily reality our family faces. Alejandro has been diagnosed with advanced end-stage liver disease—a serious and progressive condition that will continue to worsen over time. Alejandro is in urgent need of a liver transplant and is currently listed as a transplant candidate at NYU Langone Transplant Institute in New York, NY.
As his health continues to decline, one of his best chances for survival is a liver transplant from a living donor. Due to the ongoing organ shortage, wait times for a deceased donor liver are often long—and as Alejandro’s liver disease progresses, time is something he simply does not have. In our region, nearly one in five people die while waiting for a liver transplant before a lifesaving organ becomes available. A living liver donor could provide Alejandro with the life-saving surgery he urgently needs. We are reaching out to the community in hopes of finding a compassionate individual who may be able to help save Alejandro’s life through living donation.

Before being diagnosed with advanced end-stage liver disease, Alejandro was a steadfast advocate for civil rights protections and social justice. He consistently stood up against injustices faced by the most marginalized members of our society. While in college, Alejandro organized food drives, raised awareness about poverty and disenfranchisement, helped bring HIV prevention services to fellow students, and led civil action and awareness campaigns to shine a light on the everyday struggles facing our communities.
His commitment to justice did not end there. In the years that followed, Alejandro built a humble, yet extraordinary professional career rooted in service. He rose before dawn to work on legal cases that reunited families, helped new Americans achieve citizenship, and secured life-changing protections for the most vulnerable. Over the course of his life, Alejandro has helped thousands of people from all walks of life—always with compassion, patience, and hope.

Alejandro has a rare gift for restoring hope. When others told people “No,” Alejandro said, “Let’s get to work.” He created pathways where none seemed possible and reminded countless individuals of their dignity and worth. His contributions to our communities and to this nation cannot be measured in titles or praise, but in the lives, he changed and the families he brought back together. He is deeply grateful to have served his community and has always hoped to continue giving back for as long as he could.
Today, Alejandro's story remains one of hope and perseverance—but he is now facing the fight of his life. As he battles advanced end-stage liver disease, the very qualities that define him—his strength, kindness, humility, and unwavering hope—are at risk of being taken from the world far too soon. This time, you can be Alejandro's advocate and a source of hope as we navigate one of his chances to save his life.
A living-donor liver transplant is a surgical procedure in which a portion of the liver from a healthy person is placed into someone whose liver is no longer working properly after the sick liver is removed. The donor's remaining liver will re-grow and return to its normal size and capacity shortly after the surgery and the transplanted portion will grow and restore normal function in the recipient.
At NYU Langone Health, a dedicated team of living donor experts conducts thorough medical testing to ensure that donation is safe. After surgery and recovery, donors are expected to lead normal lives without the need for long-term medical care. All medical costs related to the donor evaluation, surgery, and recovery are fully covered—there are no out-of-pocket medical expenses for the donor. Additionally, resources are available to help offset logistical costs, including lost wages, travel expenses, and dependent care.
